The Lawrence Arts Center has announced it's 2010-2011 season, featuring Broadway and off-Broadway material designed to entertain and challenge adult audiences.

The season kicks off this weekend with the New Play Festival featuring three genuinely new creations. "It's All Relative", "Prop 8 On Trial" and "American Bear" will be performed Thursday, Friday & Saturday, September 16th, 17th & 18th. Individual tickets to this 18 and over event are $15 for adults and 12.50 for students and seniors. The multi-play pass is $30. Tickets can be ordered by calling 785-843-2787, through the Lawrence Arts Center website or at the box office during normal business hours.

After a two-year absence, The Snow Queen is being presented once again. Revisited by the directors, this new version has a sleeker script with all the beauty and charm of Hans Christian Andersen's strange tale of love and loyalty. The production will feature a cast of over 100 community and professional actors and dancers. Auditions for dancers and actors are scheduled for Sunday, September 19th with times scheduled as follows for different age groups - ages 5-8, 12-1:30pm, ages 9-11, 1-3:30pm, ages 12-18, 3-5:00pm, adults, 3:30-5:00pm. No prepared audition material is necessary. Questions? Contact the Lawrence Arts Center at 843-2787 or http://www.lawrenceartscenter.org/#holiday-auditions!

The Lawrence Arts Center announces an open call for exhibition proposals for the 2011-2013 season. Curators, individual artists and collectives are encouraged to submit proposals. This is a national call. The Lawrence Arts Center Exhibitions Program seeks contemporary, professional, engaging art both regionally and nationally. Accepted proposals will be scheduled for summer 2011 - August 2013. Submision deadline is September 30th.

The Lawrence Arts Center will offer a variety of activities at the Children's Art Tent at the Hidden Glen Arts Festival this Saturday from 10 am to 6 pm and Sunday from 10 am to 4 pm. Admission is free. If you would like to volunteer in the Arts Center Children's Art Tent, please contact Linda Reimond at preschool@lawrenceartscenter.org.

In addition to the Children's Art tent, the festival features an Olathe Visual Artists tent and a live "Artists in Action" tent, hosts a local plein-air event and awards high school scholarships to students pursuing careers in visual arts.

The Lawrence Arts Center is presenting an interactive exhibit on Vision and Color in its lobby during the month of September. We're interested in starting a dialogue about the science behind art-making and want to know what you're curious about. The exhibit features a demonstration of how our eyes detect light which then becomes interpreted as color. Visitors to the lobby "punch in" as photons to one of three wall-mounted counters. Each counter represents one of the three color sensing cones in the retina. At the end of each day a color-of-the-day is calculated based on the visitor input. The exhibit also features demonstrations of Johannes Itten's seven contrasts of color, a DVD highlighting some of the interplay between art and the sciences over the centuries, some flashy theatrical lighting, and new entryway graphics above the front doors.
