KC Rep Hosts Faith Night Events March 28-29

Knowing that many churches and synagogues in the metropolitan area participate in book groups centered on religious topics, Kansas City Repertory Theatre decided to offer persons of faith an opportunity to discuss the spiritual themes that are in some of the Rep’s productions.

After selected performances of The Whipping Man, a drama that explores religious identify and what it means to be free, a panel of religious leaders from various denominations throughout the city will lead a dialogue about faith and its impact on our lives.

Faith Nights discussions will take place at approximately 9:15 p.m. on Wednesday, March 28 and Thursday, March 29 (following each evening’s 7 p.m. performance). The events are free and open to the public, but a ticket must be purchased to attend the performance of The Whipping Man.

Reverend Brian Ellison, Pastor at Parkville Presbyterian Church and contributor and host on KCUR-FM, will moderate both Faith Night discussions. The religious scholar for Wednesday, March 28, is Rabbi Doug Alpert who is the spiritual leader at Congregation Kol Ami. He has previously served as the Jewish representative to the Interfaith Council of Greater Kansas City. Rabbi Alan L. Cohen, Director of Interreligious Affairs at the Jewish Community Relations Bureau/American Jewish Committee will be the scholar for the Thursday, March 29 event.

The Whipping Man runs through April 8, 2012, at Spencer Theatre in the James C. Olson Performing Arts Center at 4949 Cherry Street, Kansas City, MO. Tickets cost $20-$75; youth tickets are $20.
